National Cup Weekend

As we approach the national cup weekend, one of our board members gave his thoughts on the national cup weekends of yesteryear

“Cup Weekends in Cork are special, magical and brings back incredible memories. My Old club The 'Mon' were lucky to be involved in a few and won an unforgettable Cup against Tralee way back. Earliest memories are of Cups back in The 80s when Calor kozangas sponsored the Event and Britvic battled Burgerland with jasper, Strickland and Smith vying for Local and National bragging rights. Neptune Stadium heaving under a manic, raucous expecting crowd. An amphitheatre where gladiators went to War and after much blood letting a victor would be found. Moving The National Cup out of Cork was a disaster as the competition while held in the rebel city was an overwhelming success. The Semifinals coming back to Cork was a nod back to those days and I’m sure venues will again be packed this weekend. At the recent league game between Demons and Neptune, it was good to see The rivalry is still healthy still competitive and the game needs both to be strong and up challenging at The other end of the table. It got me thinking of olden days and De 'Mon' when we would gather especially round Christmas down at Falveys bar and a Club made and founded on spirit and camaraderie would laugh and regale each other in stories and yes songs...They were great days and I was envious that Neptune and Demons still have that club camaraderie and sense of belonging. Both clubs should cherish that and long may it continue. Good to see so many Ex Mon boys now involved with both clubs, and it's a sense of what could have been....Best of luck to all Cork clubs involved This weekend and hopefully Cork shows The Basketball World it's still The Real Capital....❤️
