Cork Under 17 Inter-area board Champions
Cork County Basketball Boards Under 17 Boys team attended the NABC Inter-Area Board competition which was hosted by the Galway Area Basketball Board over the weekend. Reports from the venue indicated that it was a brilliant day of action across the two pools which set the stage for two completivesemi-finals and an unforgettable final which highlighted the quality and intensity of inter-area basketball. The standard on display throughout the day was a credit to all involved.
The semi-finals saw Dublin (Group 1 winners) deliver a dominant performance against the Midlands with a 60-35 victory, their consistency and scoring power and a strong display at both ends of the Court proved too much. The second semi-final saw Kerry (Group 2 winners) face our Cork boys (Group 1 runners-up) in an extremely close encounter that went right to the end. Momentum swung from one team to another and in this tension filled game we edged it 48-46 to book their place in the final.
Our boys then met Dublin in an absolute cracker of a game, have lost by thirty in the pool, the improved in every other game they came with more confidence into the final. Reports from Galway indicated that both sides showed incredible determination, defensive integrity and composure under pressure. After a hard-fought battle our under 17 Boys managed to retain the crown won last year winning on a scoreline of 39-28.
The Cork County Basketball Board are super proud of the boy’s achievements and our congratulation go to them and their coaches, Dave Lyons (Mallow Basketball Club), Boguslaw Wackowski (Macroom Basketball Club) and Sam O’ Connell ( Cobh Basketball Club).
